Tongue Ties can have an impact on the way a child eats. 👅

If a child transitions from breast/bottle to solids and suddenly becomes picky, we need to find out why & get to the root of the issue.

Picky eating is "normal" for a few months in toddlerhood, but beyond that, when it persists and they continue to cut foods out or refuse to explore new foods, they are entering selective eating territory and we need to intervene. Can this happen in the absence of a tongue tie? Absolutely. BUT we should always rule one out!

If a child has a tongue tie, that means the frenula under the tongue (ya know the tissue...) is tight and causing a functional impact. In other words, it limits their ability to manage the food in their mouth. They may not be able to lateralize food to their molars to chew it properly or bring it back to their tongue to form a "ready to swallow" bolus. A tie can also lead to impaired swallow initiation. I`ve seen it in my own kid, myself, and hundreds of pediatric patients!

Be on the lookout for a child who...

🔹Avoids eating certain textures, flavors, temperatures
🔹Eats a limited number of foods (<20) and/or continually cuts more foods out
🔹Prefers to drink their calories (lots of milk?!)
🔹Grazes on snacks/food throughout the day & doesn`t eat meals
🔹Has little or no interest in eating
🔹Gags, chokes, or vomits in response to certain foods (whether they`ve engaged with it or it`s just sitting on their plate/on the table)
🔹Pockets food in their cheeks
🔹Experiences poor dental hygiene
🔹Sleeps with their mouth open
🔹Experiences discomfort after eating
