Can Tongue Ties Be a Root Cause?

Are you overlooking underlying problems in your patients?

Is it possible that you are giving surface treatments and bandaids in patient care?

Before you get upset, even with the best intentions, we can miss things. Education is the ultimate equalizer for us all. Perhaps, with more training in tethered oral tissues, we could all become expert Sherlock Holmes in finding root causes for our patients.

Example 1: A patient of a friend had been in feeding therapy for 5 years with minimal progress. Picky eater with limited food items she would ingest, articulation delay, and sensory type symptoms. She was dismissed multiple times by providers who diagnosed NO tongue tie present. Her mom called me exhausted and frustrated at the lack of progress yet so many years of therapy. After a few questions, a thorough assessment, the underlying ROOT cause was discovered. She indeed had a tongue tie and orofacial myofunctional disorder that was leading to picky eating and articulation delays.

Guess what? Tongue ties are a real thing. I’m not kidding.

We have so much data and documentation to prove this, you can look back on previous blog posts where we included research to back up our stance on tongue ties. Tongue ties often go under the radar, unnoticed because their effects can manifest in unexpected ways, such as difficulty with breastfeeding, speech issues, poor posture, sleep issues, & even mimic ADHD symptoms.

Across the ages, babies, children, and adults can be affected by tongue ties, often without even realizing it’s the root of their issues. Often a restricted tongue may not cause immediate, obvious problems with feeding or speech, but over time it can lead to issues like swallowing difficulties, mouth breathing, and speech articulation problems. These issues are often attributed to other causes.
