Hey professionals- have you been hearing the latest buzz around myofunctional therapy and wondering – Is myofunctional therapy for me? Could I add this to my toolkit?
The professional space is all a buzz about myofunctional therapy and its benefits. What exactly is it and is it right for you to add to your professional offerings?
Orofacial myology is the study and treatment of facial muscles as they relate to speech, dentition, chewing/bolus collection, swallowing, and overall mental and physical health.” – S.R. Holtzman
Myofunctional therapy is the treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs). OMDs are atypical, adaptive patterns that emerge in the absence of normalized patterns within the orofacial complex.
Which professionals should consider adding myofunctional therapy to their skill set? If you are an SLP, OT, PT, RDH, DDS, DMD – this IS in your space and could greatly impact the quality of care you offer! Whether you’re working in private practice, dental offices, homes, schools, hospitals, or anywhere else – this is for YOU!
OMDs include (but are not limited to) thumb/finger sucking, nail biting, and other harmful oral habits, routine open mouth posture (mouth breathing), forward resting posture of the tongue between or against the teeth, and/or tongue thrust.
Some of the accompanying symptoms we see clinically include narrow palate, crowded/misaligned teeth, lisp, tongue thrust, sleep disordered breathing, ADHD, fatigue, snoring, enlarged tonsils, clenching, grinding of teeth, and more!
Think about this…if the muscles of our face and mouth were functioning optimally, we would not need braces or a retainer! 👀Our tongue would act as our natural palate expander and our lips our natural braces. 👄
My call to action for all working with patients who can assess and treat OMDs is… Stop treating the symptoms and begin to address the root cause – your clients will thank you. Truly!
