I love this question and I not only receive it in my inbox but I also see it plastered everywhere on the internet. It’s such a valid question and I can see WHY you’d want to know and get on the mouth taping train…if it is true!
The influencers who are promoting lip taping promise strong jaw lines and better sleep – with no negative side effects.
But, is it true?
Do these influencers have all the facts on mouth taping, including the pros and cons, before promoting it to the public at large?
My guess is most of them do not, not to call anyone out, as my goal is strictly to educate you, so that you can make an informed decision based on all of the facts.
Mouth taping can be very beneficial, but maybe not for the reasons you are thinking.
Strong jaw lines are created by proper oro-facial resting posture, which is tongue up on the palate, teeth slightly apart, lips closed, and breathing through the nose. The tongue is a natural palate expander – which also naturally leads to a stronger jaw line.
Mouth taping itself is not bad, per se. In fact, it can be a very instrumental part helping a client reach their myofunctional therapy goals. However, it does come with some precautions!
- Always use a mouth tape that is designed for taping the mouth and is breathable.
- Ensure that you can breathe freely through both nostrils.
- Try mouth taping during the day first to make sure you’re comfortable and can sustain mouth taping for an extended period of time without any adverse events.
- Never mouth tape a child without the guidance and supervision of a licensed professional (I feel VERY strongly about this). You can do more harm than good if you cut off their air supply.
My advice is to work with an expert like a trained or certified myofunctional therapist who can guide you on using mouth tape in a way that you get the best outcomes.
To answer the question, does mouth taping create strong jaw lines – not exactly.
Proper oral resting posture and nasal breathing is actually what leads to strong jaw lines. Mouth taping is just a tool, when used correctly, to help achieve this. And it should be used under the guidance of a trained professional.
