Spoiler alert: it doesn’t just go away.
When oral dysfunction is ignored or misunderstood, kids (and adults) get labeled as “resistant,” “lazy,” or “just not getting it.” (*cue* the eye roll 🙄!)
But here’s the truth:
You can’t fix articulation, feeding, or breathing patterns with willpower alone.
No amount of articulation drills will resolve oral motor dysfunction.
No feeding hierarchy can magically override a dysfunctional system.
And no amount of therapy will give the tongue full range of motion when there’s a tie holding it hostage.
(There. I said the quiet part out loud.)
Without addressing the why behind poor oral habits- like low tongue posture, open mouth resting, or compensatory muscle use- progress stalls. Or worse, it backslides.
Think of it like trying to repaint a wall without fixing the leak first.
You can keep slapping on fresh coats of therapy, but until the root cause is addressed, the cracks keep showing up.
Myofunctional therapy identifies and corrects those cracks.
Signs Your Client Might Need Myofunctional Therapy
- They still can’t get that /r/ or /s/ sound right- despite months (or years) of articulation therapy.
- Their tongue just won’t stay put- resting low, pushing forward, or peeking between teeth.
- Mouth breathing is their norm (and their lips are rarely closed at rest).
- Mealtime is a mess- think picky eating, slow chewing, or overstuffing.
- Sleep? Not great. Think snoring, tossing and turning, or waking up tired.
- Focus and behavior issues- because poor sleep and mouth breathing impact more than just the mouth.
- They had a history of nursing challenges, bottle preference, or reflux as a baby.
- You’re seeing facial development patterns that hint at long-term airway dysfunction.
